The number twelve is the number of government in the Bible. Jesus
established His kingdom and government on the earth by using the same principle
that God had used to establish Israel in the Old Testament. Just as Israel
had twelve tribes, Jesus had twelve disciples. Using this pattern, Jesus
intended to show us a model of how to disciple not only our local communities,
but also the nations of the world.
There were also three men who always seemed to be with Jesus even when
the others weren't. James, Peter and John were His three. Leaders are encouraged
to develop three men who are exceptional in their hunger for the Word of
God. We call this "The Principle of Three."
The Old Testament picture of this is that of David's "Mighty Men." All
began at the cave of Adullam but there were "the three" who stood out in
the midst of all the rest. |
